LocScout is a mobile app for film and production crews to find, document and organise shooting locations. Scouts capture GPS-tagged photos on-site, move each location through a scouting workflow, and analyse sun position and light quality to plan the best time to shoot — all from a phone, with full offline support.

What it does

Locations
A searchable, filterable list of every scouted location, with cover photo, status, tags and photo count. Filter by status — Scouted, Shortlist, Approved, Shot, Archived.
GPS & photo capture
Captures latitude, longitude, altitude and compass heading on-site, plus photos from the camera or device library — each tagged as CLOUD or DEVICE depending on upload state.
Scout Atlas (Map)
An interactive map plotting every location as a colour-coded pin by status. Tap a pin or list row to preview, then open the full detail screen.
Sun & light analysis
A real-time sun dial with a draggable time-of-day simulator, showing sun position, light phase, shadow direction and recommended shooting windows for any location.
Projects
Groups locations into productions — Film, Commercial, Documentary, Client or Moodboard — each with its own accent colour and linked-location list.
Location detail
A full profile per location: hero photo, quick stats, status workflow, photo gallery, sun dial, coordinates with a map link, production notes, logistics, contacts and tags.
Offline-first sync
Every screen works fully offline and shows a LIVE / SYNC / LOCAL badge for its data state. Photos and edits queue on-device and upload automatically on reconnect.
Admin console
Production admins get access to team management and configuration for the database, AI engine and maps provider; crew members get standard scouting access.

Sun intelligence

The Sun tab turns a scouted location into a lighting plan: drag the hour bar to simulate any time of day and the sun dial, shadow direction and phase update in real time.

  • Phase — Golden Hour, Blue Hour, Hard Light, etc.
  • Direction & elevation — sun azimuth and altitude
  • Shadow — length multiplier and direction
  • Sunrise, sunset and solar noon for the day
  • Shooting windows with time range and best camera direction

Data source transparency

Because scouting happens in the field, every screen and photo is labelled with exactly where its data lives, so crews always know what's synced and what's still local.

User profile

Two roles: Crew Member, with standard scouting access, and Production Admin, who additionally get an Admin Console for managing team members and configuring the database, AI engine and maps provider.

Design

A clean, utilitarian field-crew aesthetic built for glare and gloves: high-contrast status colours (grey, gold, green, pink) carried consistently across chips, map pins and stat bars, with a gold accent for primary actions.
